Texas Southern University’s soon to be newest establishment is about to bring a whole new feel to TSU student life on campus.
The very anticipated and nameless new library that’s being built on TSU campus will be opening sooner than later. As you walk towards the end of the tiger walk you will see many construction workers doing their best turn this vision into reality.
As the TSU campus is about to say hello to their new library, many of the faculty, staff and students will sadly have to say goodbye to the 50 year old historic Robert James Terry Library.
TSU Executive Director of University Libraries Janice Peyton has worked at the library for many years and says how special the Robert James Terry Library is as a building.
“I think this is a beautiful building and a lot of thought has gone into it and each remodeling phase added something to the library,” Peyton said, “You could see through the ages, through the evolution of the building that became more accommodating for students.
Libraries are highly known to be a crucial necessity that provides students many resources that is needed to be able to succeed in their classes. Computers, Printers, secluded places to study and of course obviously books are just some of things students have access to in the library.
TSU senior and Robert James Terry Library employee Ashley Castillo says how students utilize the library.
“Students wants somewhere to study, they come in here, somewhere to print they use the computer lab and a few times we get students who needs books.”
The Robert James Terry Library is not just any ordinary library, it has many unique and historic pieces inside of the building. This library is known for its pieces such as the Heartman Collection, The Traditional African American Art Gallery, and many more.
Janice Peyton also say that some of these historic pieces will not be left behind and will in fact be coming along with them to the new library.
“The second floor of the library will house what we will call a gallery and we chose 41 pieces to begin to be distributed throughout the gallery.”
This library is expected to bring even more involvement and engagement from the students. Not only will there be newer but as well as more resources inside this new library.
