The Texas Southern University football team came out and showed out for its 2019 annual spring football game.
Even with the game being moved back from Saturday to Sunday due to bad weather the game still put a good crowd in the stands.
TSU’s spring football game is the conclusion to their spring training that began on March 2ndand the kick start to the upcoming season. Coming off of a not so good season last year the TSU football and their new head coach Clarence McKinney had a really signing day.
The TSU football team welcomed 20 new student-athletes along with Florida Atlantic transfer De’ Andre Johnson who is one of our quarter-backs to watch.
Attending his first year Johnson says it feels great to be here and play for Texas Southern University.
“It feels great” Johnson said, “It’s a new opportunity for me, it’s a team, it’s a new, year, to come with that is new goals and new aspirations.”
Johnson also says the expectations for the upcoming season this year is to win.
“I think they should just expect some wins, I think that’s what everyone wants to hear.” Johnson said, “I’m going to do my part, put us in the best position to do that as well as push the guys day in and day out and just build that culture of winning.”
TSU Helrald sports writer Wilson Chaney attended the spring game and says he likes the energy he sees from this team.
“I feel the energy really changed compared to last year because we have a coaching change, we have Coach McKinney now.” Chaney said, “I kind of like what I’m seeing especially from the defensive side.”
Unfortunately, TSU was forced to cancel the pre-game show starting at noon that was supposed to be the opening event for day. The pre-game was scheduled to be played by the TSU alumni but because of the rescheduling it was not enough participants.
The game still promised and provided free food for TSU students on a meal plan as long as they brought their ID.
The spring game started on time at 1 pm with offense playing in gray and defense playing in red. Throughout most of the game the defensive dominated scoring many to touch downs and keeping the offensive team from scoring.
Outside receiver Keland Davis says he believe he could have performed better during the spring game.
“I performed to the best of my ability, I believe I could have done better and go little bit harder but come to season it’s going to be a lot more than what ya’ll saw today.”
Davis is also a transfer and says this is a new opportunity for him playing at TSU.
“I made the transfer because it’s a new chance and opportunity, new coaching staff and I needed a place to come, they let me in and welcomed me.”
The defensive team won the game beating the offensive team 57-40.
The event ended with music performances by Redroue, Jay Candy and Maine Arvie.
