The Texas Southern University recreation center is just one of many great facilities on TSU’s campus.

As it sits right on the edge of TSU’s tiger walk, this place is not just an ordinary rec center but for many students it’s a home on campus. The rec center brings TSU students lots of joy giving them a place to come relax and let loose.

TSU athlete Keland Davis says the rec center brings the TSU community together.

“It brings in the community so we all can create a bond and play pick-up games and probably get better”, Keland said.

Whether it’s pacing on the track located upstairs, showing off on the court like Keland, or checking out the weights to lift, the rec gives students a range of things to do.

Even though tons of students do come to the rec center every week if not every day, one of the building managers as well as the media and marketing assistant Tiffany Conrad says more students should utilize rec because they are paying for it.

“A lot of students surprisingly don’t know that they do pay a recreation fee, its only 55 dollars but it’s open for them, you’re paying it out of your tuition so why not use it,” Conrad said.

The TSU rec center is strictly and designed only for the TSU students and Conrad also says why the rec center is a safe place for many TSU tigers.

“You can come here and work out, you can have fun, you can relax so it’s basically a three in one combo.” Conrad said, “It’s a sense of comfortability, it’s a sense of home”.

From the treadmills, to the pool, and to the dance studios, students never run out of different activities to get into. Plus, the rec center even provides dance and workout classes for students to participate in.

One of the workout instructors Monae Branch explains what she teaches and what her workout class consist of.

“I teach a group exercise class and basically group exercise is guided instruction, I teach a full core workout on Mondays at noon, and I teach a full body strengthen and toning class on Tuesdays at four.” Branch said.

It doesn’t stop there, as many know a healthy life style isn’t just about working your body out but it’s also what you put into your body. The rec center also gives students that healthy option on campus.

Natural is the newest and healthiest restaurant on TSU campus. It was placed upstairs inside the rec center in September of 2018 fall semester.

Natural’s supervisor Salon Dickerson says all the food they serve is natural.

“We’re a healthy option on campus, we know that a lot of kids are trying to eat really healthy, Dickerson said, “We have natural juices, we juice our own fruit, we have smoothies, and you can build you own sandwich and we just have a lot of healthy options.”

Having so much complexity the rec center will continue to be a great asset and a home on campus for TSU students.
